Varicose Veins Q & A

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are bulging blue veins that develop from a backup of blood caused by faulty valves in your veins. They can develop in any vein in your body but occur most often in the legs. Women are more prone to the development of varicose veins than men.

Your veins are responsible for carrying your blood back to your lungs for oxygenation. As the muscles in your legs push the blood forward, the tiny valves in your veins open and then close to prevent backflow. If the valve is damaged or not working properly, the blood leaks and collects in the vein, creating a bulging, gnarled vein.

Can varicose veins lead to health issues?

You aren’t alone if you find varicose veins aesthetically unappealing. However, though varicose veins don’t always cause health problems, they do indicate venous insufficiency and can lead to discomfort, including throbbing or aching pain.

Varicose veins can also lead to other health issues, such as:

  • Chronic skin ulcers
  • Bleeding at the site of your varicose vein
  • Deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot in a deeper vein
  • Superficial thrombophlebitis, a blood clot in a vein closer to the skin.

Although you can manage your varicose veins with self-care at home, such as keeping your leg raised when you can and wearing loose clothing, if you don’t like how your varicose veins look or they’re getting worse, Dr. Eden Giammaria can evaluate your veins and develop a treatment plan to get rid of them.

How are varicose veins treated?

Dr. Eden Giammaria is a vascular specialist who offers the latest treatments for getting rid of your varicose veins.

Endovenous laser ablation

Endovenous laser ablation is an advanced treatment that gets rid of large varicose veins without surgery. During the procedure, Dr. Eden Giammaria inserts a laser fiber into your vein, and the laser energy destroys the vein.

Sclerotherapy is one of the most common treatments for varicose veins. During this treatment, Dr. Eden Giammaria injects a chemical into your vein that causes the walls of your veins to collapse, which seals off the vein.

Dr. Eden Giammaria also offers foam sclerotherapy, which is a newer treatment for larger varicose veins that uses a foam solution for sealing.

Dr. Eden Giammaria offers both microphlebectomy and ambulatory phlebectomy, which are outpatient procedures that remove large or small varicose veins through tiny incisions in your legs.
